Curry's tough love

The last few days, Curry has had me worried.  She is giving the puppies a tough love approach when it comes to hunger.  She can listen to them scream forever before going in and nursing them.  It is maddening but I understand at the same time, she might only want to feed when she has a lot of milk available, or may be trying to teach them to stretch it a little longer before losing it.  It's way too early to wean them but I might be on the verge of supplementing their diet a little with some puppy gruel.

In the meantime, here is a group shot for everyone, I like to call this one "Angle parking":

Day 13 All Eyes Open!

Little Mango's right eye popped open yesterday so we are all caught up now.  Leave it to the boys to bring on the next developmental step.  Bombay is walking, well it's pretty wobbly but boy is he intent!  And not far behind we have Rogan Josh, Tandoori, Chai and Bhindi.

I am also seeing some cute new behaviours such as mouthing each other (gumming each other in this case), curling up to sleep, whereas before they would just lay on their sides, and a hint of dreaming (growling, running, peeping, chirping.) They are also beginning to stretch and yawn. Might seem like simple things to you and I, but none of this was happening in week 1. They will be 2 weeks old tomorrow and from everything I have read, the bigger changes start to come on a lot more after this. I am strapped in for the ride!

Development is such a cool thing

As is normal with litters of puppies, the development is a little staggered.  Some of them start doing something new and within a few days, they all are.

Take eyes for example.  On Wednesday, I saw a few little corners start to pry open, the next day I was seeing blue eyeball on a couple of the boys and 1 girl, and now on Sunday 15 eyes are open and just one puppy's right eye is sealed.  They all started on the left by the way!

Growling was next.  Rogan Josh was heard murmuring a teensy growl when I put Tikka back in the nest.  He was completey asleep, and dreaming when he did this so it was not brought on by anything in particular.  To watch the clip, it is at the end of this bit:

That was the same night 2 of them had a bowel movement without being stimulated by Mom.

Current Weights

I was weighing everyone religiously each morning during the first week, but now that all are growing and 'bulking up', I have dropped down the frequency to a couple of times a week.

Current weights:

Bombay- 1 lb 13 oz

Tandoori- 1 lb 15 oz

Rogan Josh- 1 lb 15 oz

Vindaloo- 1 lb 10 oz

Mango- 1 lb 6 oz

Chai- 1 lb 9 3/4 0z

Bhindi- 1 lb 11 oz

Tikka- 1 lb 12 oz

Both Mango and Chai were lagging on the weight gain but it looks as though Chai has caught up.  Now it's Mango's turn to add a few ounces, but all in all the spread is perfectly fine- only 9 ounces between the biggest and smallest.  I will take that anyday!

updates at 10 days old

Some of the puppies eyes have been slowly opening for the past few days.  It's neat to see them go from completely sealed and blind to starting little by little, tiny bits of blue eye visible in the corners.  The biggest pups are first to open, which I suppose makes sense developmentally.  So far we have teeny slits of eye open on Bombay and Tandoori.  Bhindi also has a little action happening on the left eye (all of them started with the left.)

And walking!  Tikka appears to have stood up on all 4 legs today and taken a step or 2 before falling over on Rogan Josh.  Up until now it's been a lot of dragging along mixed with a little rolling and getting pushed along by others.

Exciting times- we are about to go from newborn to infant!
